FAQs

Treatment

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

+
-

This is very individual depending on the complexity of orthodontic problems that need to be solved. Sometimes treatment can take a few months and sometimes up to two years or more. Correcting jaw and bite problems usually takes longer. Some companies claim to be able to finish treatment in a few months but this is generally just straightening of the teeth without considering how the teeth and jaws should properly meet and this type of orthodontic treatment has significant limitations.

How many appointments will I need?

+
-

This depends on how long your treatment takes. Appointments are usually every 4-10 weeks depending on your needs. We will discuss this in depth with you during the consultation appointment.

What is the best age for orthodontic treatment?

+
-

The best age to start orthodontic treatment varies depending on each patient’s individual orthodontic problems and needs. Everybody grows and develops at different rates and the same applies to the teeth and jaws. Sometimes children are too young to start treatment if we need to wait for all of their adult teeth to come through or for a certain phase of growth in their jaws. In these situations we would see your child for regular visits to closely monitor things. This gives us the ability to intervene at the optimal time for the best possible outcome. Sometimes small interventions at a young age can give rise to major improvements and make orthodontic treatment a lot simpler and faster.

Can I choose what type of orthodontic treatment I have?

+
-

Yes. We offer a comprehensive range of all contemporary orthodontic services and types of orthodontic treatment options. Often, one type of treatment option is better for your particular orthodontic problem but this will be discussed with you at your consultation appointment and the choice is always yours. For an overview of the different treatment options see our services section.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

+
-

Metal braces, clear braces and Invisalign all work by applying pressure to the teeth. Over time the pressure applied to the teeth and jaws moves things into the best position to get that beautiful smile and perfect bite. To find out how this process works with us please see what to expect.

Why is orthodontic treatment important?

+
-

Orthodontic treatment is important to different people for different reasons. Sometimes having an incorrect bite can cause jaw problems, tooth wear and gum issues which may worsen with time. Having your teeth and jaws meeting correctly improves function, improves appearance and reduces the risk of complications. We believe smiling with confidence has lifelong benefits and many of our patients report huge improvements in self-confidence following orthodontic treatment.

How does Invisalign work?

+
-

Invisalign is a brand of clear aligner that fits over your teeth and works like braces to move them into place slowly over time. These come in a series, are removable and need to be changed regularly until treatment is complete. Because the aligners are clear they look great and most people won’t notice you’re wearing them. They can also be removed for sports or when you eat. Once treatment is completed you may need to wear a clear retainer at night.

Can retainers straighten teeth without braces?

+
-

This is a commonly asked question. Retainers are technically worn after treatment is complete to stop things from moving. Aligners on the other hand like Invisalign are made of clear plastic that fits over your teeth and can straighten teeth without braces. This is very good option if you don’t like the look of braces. Aligners are active appliances used to “align” teeth into the correct position, whereas, retainers are a passive appliance and “retain” the position of your teeth after treatment.
